faris. >> i'm rob nelson. we begin with a mixed message from our latest poll. most americans do not like the way president obama is handling our nation's economy. >> with more on the poll, we're joined by abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: good morning, diana and rob. ronald reagan asked a simple question in 1980. are you better off than you were four years ago. president obama probably doesn't want americans thinking about this question this november. most americans say they are worse off than better. with the election less than six months away, president obama looks vulnerable. according to a new abc news/"washington post" poll, the president's job approval rating has become 16%. and 30% say they are worse off. the prosperity short fall echoes

george w. bush in 1992, when he lost his re-election bid. not wanting history to repeat itself, the president and his campaign has been on the attack, going after mitt romney's record as a businessman. >> if your main argument for how to grow the economy is, i knew how to make a lot of money for investors, then you're missing what this job is about. >> reporter: the obama campaign argues the job of president is to figure out how ever american has a fair shot. romney calls president obama's attack on his business record, an attack on free enterprise. and argues the president refuses to accept responsibility for his failed policies. but there's signs mr. obama's argument may be working. the president and romney are locked in a dead heat. and only 19% of voters feel they would be better off with a romney presidency. the obama campaign drives home its message in this ad, portraying romney, as a

heartless correspondent raider. >> romney takes from the poor and gives to the rich. just the opposite of robin hood. >> reporter: president obama says his campaign will keep focusing on romney's business record because mr. obama says romney's business experience is his calling card. >> thanks, tahman. speaking of the president, he took time out for a quick trip to joplin, missouri, to deliver the high school commencement address there. >> today marks one year, after an ef-5 tornado obliterated that city. president obama praised them for their resiliency. and he urged the class to give back, like others have given to them. >> there's such a decency. a bigness of spirit in this country of ours. so, class of 2012, you have to remember that. remember what people did here. and like that man who came all the way from japan to joplin,

make sure, in your own life, that you pay it forward. >> the twister hit just hours after last year's graduation, killing 161 people, including 2 high school students. we're getting a new look this morning at the sheer force of that tornado. newly released surveillance video, shows the mercy hospital, just as the disaster struck. blowing away chairs and pretty much everything else. >> that building was a total loss. but it's being replaced by a $500 million campus, which is now under construction. and they are totalling up the damages from the deadly earthquake that hit italy's farming region. total agriculture losses have topped $250 million, including damage to some 400,000 wheels of cheese. there's fears about the long-term impact on italy's already shaky economy. and a fourth body has been found on mt. everest. all four victims died saturday,

while descending from the summit. experts worry that too many climbers may have led to the deaths, since people waited until dangerously late to begin the assent. a developing story overnight. there's been an arrest in the disappearance of a northern california teenager. sierra lamar disappeared while walking to the bus stop. and police say they have strong physical evidence in this case. a single-engine plane managed to miss homes and people, when it crashed into a southern california neighborhood last night. the plane sliced through power lines and landed upside-down on the sidewalk, in the city of glendale. the pilot who reported engine problems, was able to free himself, though, from the wreckage. lucky him. and lucky for that neighborhood. >> that's right. there's a new era in space flight. it opened up overnight in florida. a commercial rocket has blast off with a bloload of supplies

the international space station. >> abc's lisa stark has more on this historic flight. >> three, two, one, zero. and launch. >> reporter: after years of effort and months of delay, history in the making. for the first time, a privately-built rocket and space capsule is heading to the international space station. spacex, with its cap chul named dragon, is the dream of elan luck. it's one of a number of companies vying to get into space. >> reporter: with the space shuttle at museums and the u.s. relying on the russians to ferry astronauts and cargo to the space station, nasa is turning to private companies to fill the gap. it paid spacex, $400 million for two launches. >> they're going to be responsible for building and operating.

we're going to buy the service for them. >> reporter: dragon's job is to pull up to the space station. the capsule is carrying the ashes of 308 people, including james duhon, scottie from "star trek." the ashes in a canister will be jet jet jettisonned into space. a rutgers convicted of spying on his gay roommate. prosecutors say the punishment is too lenient. and they plan to appeal. and ravi's attorney says he never should have been convicted in the first place. and they are also appealing. medical experts are recommending that healthy men should not get routine prostate cancer screening tests. the government panel is afwirming its earlier findings, that the screenings used by half

that opens tomorrow. tokyo's nikkei average was up 95 points today. hong kong's hang seng added 224. in london, the ftse opened higher. and the dow picked up 135 points yesterday. the nasdaq index gained 68. good timing for this year's college grads. the outlook for getting a job is the best it's been in four years. campus job fairs have been packed. some students have been weighing multiple offers. many, though, began preparing for the job hunt in their freshman year. and many of the grads want to work for apple. it's really no wonder. apple is still the world's most valuable brand. a survey finds the brand rose 19% in the past year. seven of the top ten most valuable brands were, of course, technology firms. no surprise there. >> good days at apple. that's for sure. a juice company's brand just lost quite a bit of its luster. a judge says pom's wonderful health claims are not so

charlotte. now, to a death-defying plunge from one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the world. an attempted suicide at niagara falls. >> this really is incredible. a man stunned tourists yesterday when he climbed over a retaining wall and deliberately jumped. amazingly, he survived. and rescuers were able to pluck him to safety. >> just saw a person, a gentleman, jump in the water. >> he was just -- i think a guy is already on the river, going down on the falls. >> that man, as you can imagine, was seriously injured. but he is expected to live. he is now the third person to survive going over the falls without a safety device. there was another dramatic scene at another waterfall. this one involving a 13-year-old boy in washington state. he was rescued after spending eight hours stuck on a tiny

ledge. he had slipped on river rocks and gone over a ten-foot waterfall. had he not grabbed on to the ledge, he would have been swept down a bigger waterfall. that, a 270-foot drop. prominent program catholics are taking their battle over birth control to a whole new level. many arch diocese are suing the obama administration, for the mandate for employers to provide coverage for birth control. many of the clergy oppose the mandate, saying it violates religious freedom. more investigators are under investigation for prostitutes in colombia. employees of the d.e.a. interstained others. this follows the secret service scandal of prostitutes at another hotel in that city. >> second scandal. time for sports highlights. we get those from espn news.
